Yes, I admit, my passion for photography is getting to another level. Since we moved to our new house, we decided to have a large panaromatic print made of one of our pictures from our trip to Tuscany.
Now, whenever you go and spend big money to have a large print made and have it laminated on a carier to be put against your wall, you want the end result to be absolutely spot-on. One thing that’s always tricky when making print outs of your digital pictures, is getting the colors right. Things depend largely on the quality and color fidelity of your monitor. I recently upgraded my monitor to a nice Eizo model so I immediately went all the way and bought myself a monitor calibrator as well.
After the obligarory internet search, I narrowed down the options to the following devices:
- Pantone Huey Pro
- Spyder 3 Pro
- X-Rite Eye-One Display2
The Huey Pro gets some nice reviews but there are also people who have mixed experiences with this device. Judging by the hardware used with the Huey, the results seem to vary with the monitor that was used. Same thing seems to be true for the Spyder 3 Pro. So in the end I went for the Eye-One Display 2 which is getting good reviews basically everywhere but is unfortunately also the most expensive option of the 3.
In the end, I found one brand new on Ebay which I bought and received yesterday.
So far, I only tested the Display 2 on the miserable LCD display of my Dell laptop. On the laptop it improved things rather dramatically, of course staying within the capabilities of the LCD panel itself, but you really see the improvement of the calibration.
Tomorrow I’ll be testing it on my Eizo monitor. I’m curious how the Display 2 and the Eizo will get along.
